Luganville sits on the south coast of Espiritu Santo — Vanuatu's largest island — facing a wide, sheltered bay that opens to the Coral Sea. It's the kind of place most kiters fly over on the way to more famous Pacific destinations, and that's precisely what makes it interesting. The kite scene here is minimal, the crowds are nonexistent, and the water is genuinely calm. The bay faces west, and from May through October the SE trade winds wrap around the coastline to deliver a side-shore angle — running roughly parallel to the beach rather than straight in off the water. At 15–22 knots, the trades are steady without being punishing, and the protected geography keeps the surface flat and clean. For riders who find cross-offshore conditions stressful, this side-shore setup feels natural: the wind pushes you along the beach rather than dragging you out to sea. Getting to Luganville is straightforward — it's the main town on Espiritu Santo, well connected by domestic flights from Port Vila, and the town itself borders the bay. That said, don't expect a dedicated kite beach with marked launches and on-site gear rental. Luganville is not a kite destination in any organised sense. You're bringing your own equipment, doing your own setup, and self-assessing the conditions. The water rewards that self-sufficiency. The bay is calm and clear, with the kind of visibility that makes you understand why this region is famous for its WWII dive wrecks. Stay oriented to your position relative to shore — the bay is wide, and a long downwinder on a side-shore day will take you further along the coast than you might expect. Because the kite scene is so small, there's no one to flag you down if something goes wrong. Carry a leash knife, know your self-rescue, and don't push it on days when the trades are gusting toward the top of the range or beyond. There's no kite school, no on-water safety cover, and no gear shop visible from the waterfront. After a session, Luganville has real character. You'll find solid options for food — Coolidge Bar & Grill, Beach House, 1606, Chez Charles, and Le village santo are all here. For something more local, kava bars dot the town: Canal View Kava Bar, Green light kava bar, Club de Sanma, Attar, and Kava Bar among them. A shell of kava after a session is as much a part of the Vanuatu experience as the wind itself. This is a spot for the traveller who has a reason to be in Vanuatu already — diving the wrecks, exploring the Blue Holes, or moving slowly through the Pacific. If you're here and the trades are running, it's worth rigging up. But if you're planning a kite trip specifically around Luganville, recalibrate your expectations: conditions can be solid, the infrastructure simply isn't there yet to support a dedicated kite holiday.
