About Cửa Đại Beach (Hội An)

Cửa Đại Beach sits at the mouth of the Thu Bon River, just a few kilometres from Hoi An's famous ancient town. The beach faces east — shore normal sits around 90° — and when the northeast monsoon kicks in between November and March, it delivers side-shore winds in the 18–28 knot range that make this one of the more consistent kite spots on Vietnam's central coast. Getting here is straightforward. Hoi An is well-connected and tuk-tuks or taxis from the old town cover the distance easily. The kite spot itself is established about 500 metres south of the main resort zone — that separation matters, because the beach in the northern stretch gets busier and the sand has narrowed significantly from erosion. Head south and you'll find more room to work with. The water south of the river mouth is flat, which is the real draw here. The Thu Bon delivers a sheltered zone that suits riders who want to practice freestyle moves or work on their upwind game without dealing with chop. During the monsoon, the northeast wind feeds into the usable kite window (0°–180°) as a clean side-shore angle, which keeps the lines honest on launch and gives you a clear downwind run. Launching is manageable but you'll want to be organised. The beach has narrowed from years of erosion, so space on the sand isn't as generous as it looks on the map — check the high-tide line before you rig up. Walk the 500-metre mark south of the resort stretch and you'll have beach and water room to work with. A competent second pair of hands for the launch helps, especially on the stronger monsoon days. Skill-wise, the flat water makes this approachable for intermediates looking for their first proper downwinders or freestyle sessions. The 18–28 knot monsoon window is broad enough to cover a range of kite sizes, though on the upper end an intermediate should be honest about their edge control before committing to a full session. After riding, the area has a solid cluster of food and drink options close to the beach. Blue Dragon, Cafe Des Amis, Bep Nha Mi, and Cafe Restaurant 144 cover the sit-down meal end of things. For a drink and a debrief there's Banana Leaf, Cafe Nguyên Ly, Cafe Phôn, Can, and Cargo Club Cafe & Restaurant. Beach Haven Suites Hoi An is the closest accommodation option for those wanting to base themselves near the spot rather than commuting from the old town each morning. The trade-off: this isn't a year-round spot. Outside the NE monsoon window, wind drops off and the beach gets quiet. Time your visit right, give yourself the week to score the better sessions, and Cửa Đại is a solid stop on any Southeast Asia kite trip.
