Arraial do Cabo sits at the tip of a small peninsula on the Atlantic coast of Rio de Janeiro state, positioned to catch the open South Atlantic fetch without much in the way of shelter. What drives this spot is cold-water upwelling — the same phenomenon that keeps sea temperatures at 18–22°C during the prime season and generates the strong, consistent NE wind the area is known for. The connection between cold current and reliable wind is direct: when upwelling is active, the conditions follow. That wind runs across a wide usable arc, from roughly north through east (340° to 120°), and in established conditions typically delivers 16–25 knots. October through March is the prime window, when the NE pattern locks in and stays. The broad wind arc means the spot stays workable even when the angle shifts a few degrees, which keeps sessions going longer than a more direction-sensitive layout would allow. The water looks tropical — genuinely turquoise and clear — but it is not warm. Expect 18–22°C during peak season, cold enough that a shorty or light spring suit is worth having. The chill comes with the territory; the same upwelling current producing the cold is the one producing the wind. Think of it as a package deal. Several beaches in and around Arraial offer different angles of exposure and different water textures. The exposed Atlantic position means swell is part of the picture when wind is up, so expect choppy to occasionally messy conditions rather than flat water. This is not a spot that naturally lends itself to beginners. Riders comfortable in the 16–25 kn range, happy on a wave-influenced surface, will find it a strong option. The combination of reliable wind, distinctive water colour, and an Atlantic character makes for a memorable session. For instruction and equipment, DC KITESCHOOL operates roughly 12 kilometres away near Cabo Frio — worth contacting ahead of arrival if you need a lesson or a rental quiver. After a session, Doce Home Café is the closest option at around 175 metres from the beach. Bob's Shakes is a short walk further at about 570 metres for a full meal. The area is well served beyond that: Bar Verde, Big Bar, Casarão, Esplanada dos Ministérios, and a local churrascaria a quilo are all within roughly a kilometre. Bar da Árvore and Bar do Luiz round things out close by. Cold drinks and food are not hard to find. Arraial do Cabo rewards riders who respect the Atlantic exposure, dress for cold water, and take the time to read conditions before launching.
