Cabo Frio is a well-established coastal city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and Praia do Forte is its main beach — a 7.5 km stretch of open Atlantic sand that draws kiters with consistent easterly and north-easterly winds. Araruama Lake sits immediately behind the coast and acts as a geographic funnel, channelling and reinforcing the onshore flow. The result is more reliable wind pressure than you'd typically find at an exposed open-beach spot without that kind of backing geography. The beach is wide and long enough that crowding rarely becomes an issue. You're launching from sand, and the wide usable wind arc — running from northwest around through east to south-southeast — means the dominant E and NE winds almost always fall within a workable window. The ocean character here is choppy and open: Atlantic swell meets local wind chop to produce a short, lumpy surface. It lends itself to powered freeride and freestyle moves rather than wave riding or flat-water precision work. Sessions here have a certain rawness to them — this is open Atlantic coast, not a sheltered bay. One thing worth knowing before you pack: upwelling along this stretch of coast pulls cold water to the surface, making the Atlantic here noticeably cooler than kitesurfing spots further north in Brazil. A thin shorty is a sensible addition to the kit bag, even in the warmer months. The prime window runs August through October. During this period, E-to-NE winds typically reach 11–22 kt and hold with enough consistency to plan sessions around. Outside this window conditions can still materialise, but expect more variability and fewer reliable days. The spot suits intermediates and experienced riders who are comfortable in open-ocean chop. Complete beginners will find the lumpy surface demanding — relaunching and upwind recovery both become harder when the water isn't flat, and there's no sheltered zone to fall back on if things go wrong. After a session, the food and drink situation is straightforward. For full meals, Galeto do Zé, Galeto do Raimundo Pizzaria e Restaurante, Picanha do Zé, Pançudo, Bob's, and McDonald's are all accessible from the beach area. For something lighter — coffee, a pastry, a cold drink — Cantinho da Tia Maria, café no bule, Gayosque Bambu, and Coral padaria e restaurante cover the casual end. It's a practical beach town rather than a resort strip, which suits the no-nonsense riding conditions well.
