About Barra Nova

Barra Nova sits on the Ceará coastline about 75 kilometres south-east of Fortaleza, where a tidal lagoon opens up beside a river mouth wave break. The geography here does something useful: it separates flat-water from wave riding into two distinct zones without making you choose one or the other on arrival. You can work the lagoon for clean, manageable flat water, then shift to the river mouth and find clean waves on the same wind. The usable kite window runs from 290° through to 90° — a wide arc that accommodates the East trade wind that drives the spot. That trade typically comes in at 15 to 25 knots and arrives side-onshore at the lagoon entrance. Side-onshore is a favourable angle: there's good power across the water without the full push of a dead onshore that stacks up chop and makes launching uncomfortable. It also keeps riders working parallel to the shoreline — manageable territory for intermediate-level kiteboarders on a typical trade wind day. The lagoon is tidal, and that matters practically. Water depth, the shape of sandbanks, and the size of the riding area all shift meaningfully with the tide. A low tide can expose wide, shallow flats that are awkward to navigate on a board; a rising tide can reduce the usable riding space and close off launch points faster than expected. Check the tidal state before you kit up. The river mouth wave break is a different environment altogether. When the East trade is running, it delivers clean waves at the mouth — a promising setup for riders who are comfortable in surf. River mouth currents can be significant, and the break deserves a proper read before you commit to it. July through January is the prime window. The East trade consolidates over these months, giving the most reliable sessions. Outside this window, wind consistency drops off and conditions become patchier. Reaching Barra Nova from Fortaleza means following the coast road south-east and then transitioning to local tracks for the final approach. Road access into small coastal communities in this part of Ceará typically involves unpaved sections, and conditions deteriorate after heavy rain. Plan the drive accordingly, especially if you're carrying a full quiver. There are no listed facilities at the spot. This is a small coastal settlement, not a kite centre. Bring water, food, sunscreen, and any equipment you might need before you leave the last large town. Self-sufficiency at Barra Nova is not optional.
