About Itapema

Itapema sits on the Santa Catarina coast roughly midway between Balneário Camboriú and Florianópolis, making it a solid stop on its own or a day trip from either city. The beach faces east — that orientation is the whole story here: when the prevailing E-to-NE wind sets in, you get a clean side-onshore angle that keeps you tracking parallel to the shore with a decent margin of safety built in. Getting there is straightforward. Itapema is a proper beach town with a decent spread of accommodation: Hotel Resort Residencial Itapema Vacation Club and Itapema Hotel cover the larger end of the market, while Hotel D'Luz and Nilmare Apart Hotel are more compact options. Parking near the beach is generally available outside peak summer weekends, when the town fills up with domestic tourists. The launch sits on the beach itself. The side-onshore angle makes it manageable — you're not fighting a fully onshore wind, and you're not looking at a straight-downwind blow to open water either. That said, this is a shared public beach with swimmers and other beach users in the mix. Scope your launch window and pick a less crowded stretch before you rig, especially mid-summer. In the water, the E-to-NE winds run at 12–20 knots during the reliable spring-to-summer window. At the lower end it's a comfortable freeride session; when the wind builds into the upper range, there's real power to work with, and the easterly fetch across the Atlantic brings some wave texture into the mix. This is an intermediate-level spot — you want confident water-starts and solid downwind riding before you show up. It's not where you learn the basics.
