About Calhau Beach

Calhau Beach sits on the northern fringe of São Luís, capital of Maranhão state and one of Brazil's most distinctive colonial cities. Unlike purpose-built kite destinations, this is an urban beach with a proper local life — beach bars, residential buildings, locals in the water, and a coastal road running behind. The wind doesn't care about any of that. From July through November, strong north-easterly trade winds hit the beach side-onshore, opening up a stretch of clear Atlantic water that reads well on a kite. The usable window runs from south-west through north-east (225° to 45°), which aligns with the prevailing conditions throughout the core season. The standout feature here is the downwind potential. Calhau forms part of one of the world's longest urban downwind kite routes — a connected stretch of beach running 20-plus kilometres with the north-east wind at your back and city infrastructure on one side, open ocean on the other. Running the full route takes logistics — you'll need a drop-off arrangement or a plan for getting back — but even shorter sections give you a feel for why this stretch has a reputation. The riding suits intermediates well. Side-onshore conditions with open water make for comfortable, forgiving riding, but the urban setting adds its own demands: foot traffic on the beach, the awareness required when launching and landing near people, and enough real estate to manage if things go wrong. You want solid kite control before committing to the longer downwind runs. Beginners would be better off starting somewhere more contained. Beach-side food is well covered: Barraca do Henrique, Barraca Ohana, Cabana do Sol, Dunas Beach Bar e Restaurante, and Picanha Beach are all close to the water. Getting here is straightforward — São Luís is well-connected as the state capital of Maranhão, and Calhau is a short drive from the city centre. The city rewards a few extra days if you have them: a colonial historic centre and a strong Afro-Brazilian cultural identity that sets it apart from most Brazilian beach towns. Outside the July–November core window, the north-east trades ease off and conditions become less reliable. If the downwinder is the goal, time it right.
