About Uruaú

Uruaú sits on the Ceará coastline about 90 kilometres south-east of Fortaleza, where a broad coastal lagoon backs a stretch of open Atlantic beach. The combination gives you two completely different rides within a short walk of each other: glassy flat water in the lagoon for freestyle and freeride, and open-ocean swells on the beach side for anyone chasing waves. Getting there from Fortaleza means roughly 90 kilometres of road heading south-east along the coast. It is not a long trip, but factor in travel time if you are planning a morning session — the earlier you arrive, the better the wind angle. The wind here is the E-to-ENE trade, typically blowing 15–25 knots on a solid day. In the morning it comes in side-onshore, which is the sweet spot for launching cleanly and working either the lagoon or the beach break without fighting the wind direction. As the day progresses the angle rotates more onshore, which can work fine for riding waves in toward the beach but makes repositioning after a downwind run a little more deliberate. The lagoon is the main draw for most riders. Flat water, consistent wind funnelled across the surface, and room to work on tricks or just rail a twin-tip without worrying about chop. It suits intermediates well — you have enough space to sort your lines, and the flat water means falls are more forgiving than in broken surf. More advanced riders tend to split their time between the lagoon for precision work and the beach side when the swell is running. The ocean beach offers a different character entirely. The Atlantic here throws up a genuine swell, and with the trade blowing side-onshore in the morning you can set up for wave riding or powered carves. It is more demanding than the lagoon — read the break before you rig, and keep the afternoon wind shift in mind: what felt like a comfortable side-shore launch in the morning can be noticeably more onshore by early afternoon. No facilities are listed at the spot itself, so arrive self-sufficient with water, food, and any gear spares you might need. Treat it as a day-trip from Fortaleza and plan accordingly. The usable wind arc runs 285°–85°, so anything from west-north-west around through north and east to just south of east keeps conditions workable. The dominant E-to-ENE trade sits squarely in that window, meaning on a proper trade-wind day you are in good shape across both zones. Days when the wind clocks further south or drops off are better spent elsewhere.
