Basin Head sits at the eastern tip of Prince Edward Island, tucked into a Provincial Park a short drive from the sailing town of Souris. The beach here is famous for something you notice before you've even unrolled your kite: the sand sings. Fine quartz grains produce a squeaking sound underfoot, a geological quirk that makes Basin Head one of the more memorable spots on the island — and a decent conversation starter with the families sharing the beach in summer. The exposure is almost entirely eastward, opening onto the Atlantic with the full fetch that implies. When E or SE winds fill in through the summer months, you're looking at clean, unobstructed airflow with nothing between you and open ocean to interfere with it. The usable kite window runs from NNW all the way around through north, east, south and into SSE, giving the spot flexibility across a wide range of wind directions, but it's at its best when the Atlantic delivers those E and SE breezes in the 15–25 knot range. The water is a genuine standout. Basin Head is known for unusually clear, warm water by Maritime Canadian standards — the nearshore area retains heat in a way that surprises first-timers expecting cold North Atlantic conditions. That warmth is relative in June; by July and August the shallows feel genuinely inviting and the visibility is striking. Access is through the Provincial Park, which means organized parking, summer facilities, and a level of infrastructure you won't find at a random beach. The launch is on the singing sand beach itself — firm enough to rig on, though you'll want to give room to other park visitors, particularly at peak summer weekends when Basin Head draws families as much as water sports enthusiasts. The season runs June through September. July and August typically deliver the most consistent E and SE winds; June can be lighter and variable as the season builds; September extends the riding window but the water cools and the crowds thin. Mid-summer is the sweet spot for most visiting kiters. One thing to keep in mind: Atlantic-facing fetch cuts both ways. The same easterly that delivers powered, clean sessions can build swell and chop when conditions push beyond forecast. The spot suits intermediate and above riders comfortable with a beach launch on swell-influenced water. Absolute beginners would do better learning in more sheltered conditions before committing here. Getting to PEI means crossing the Confederation Bridge from the mainland or taking the ferry — factor that into trip planning. This is a destination spot. Souris is close by for food and accommodation, and the Provincial Park itself covers the basics during operating season.
