Havre-aux-Basques Lagoon is the main kite water on the islands, and it earns that status honestly. The lagoon is shallow and flat — genuinely flat, the kind you stop appreciating until you're somewhere with swell. Water temperatures reach 18–20°C in July and August, considerably warmer than you might expect from a Gulf of St Lawrence address. No jellyfish, no sharks. The surrounding dune landscape is striking: long sandbars and rolling dunes frame the water on all sides, giving the spot a backdrop that stops you mid-rig. Prevailing wind is south-westerly, running 9–22 knots through peak season. July and August are the target window — more consistent breeze, comfortable air temperatures, and long summer evenings that stretch sessions well into the afternoon if conditions hold. The lagoon divides into two distinct zones. The shallow left side (as you stand facing the water) stays forgiving throughout — calm, shallow water with room to make mistakes without serious consequence. It's genuine beginner and learning territory, and the schools here know it. Aerosport les Iles, École de kite Jasmin Bousquet, and Full Wind Les Iles School Kitesurf all operate on-site, so expect lesson activity in that zone during the day. Move out into the open centre and the character changes: more fetch, higher speeds, and the space to push bigger moves and work on technique. For a place this remote, the infrastructure around the spot is solid. Accommodation covers a wide range — Auberge chez Sam, Auberge du Port, Auberge Du Village, and Château Madelinot for those who want a roof, or Camping Barachois if you'd rather pitch close to the water. Chez Renard covers post-session food. One thing to plan for: the 9–22 knot range is wide, and the Gulf of St Lawrence exposure means changes can arrive without much warning. Check conditions early, rig with a buffer, and don't get caught under-kited if the breeze softens through the afternoon. The flat water and warm temperatures make for a very forgiving riding environment — but rigging sensibly still applies. Sort your travel early. Peak-season access to the islands books up well ahead, and this is a trip worth planning properly.
