Bo'ao sits on Dongyu Island at the mouth of the Wanquan River, where Hainan's eastern coast opens toward the South China Sea. It's China's most established kite hub — a sheltered lagoon system with multiple sandbars and channels that creates a forgiving, readable stretch of water whether you're learning or clocking up flat-water mileage. From Haikou airport the drive takes roughly 1.5 hours. On arrival, the northern stretch of Dongyu Island is where the action is concentrated: luxury resort hotels line the coast, and kitesurf schools are set up directly alongside them. You won't need to search for equipment or instruction. The main launch sits in the sheltered lagoon facing east toward the South China Sea. Multiple sandbars give you options depending on tide and wind direction, and the shallow-water environment keeps things manageable even when the breeze strengthens. Head south along the beach and you reach Jade Belt Beach — a popular sandbank that doubles as a natural downwind target and a clean run back upwind. The whole setup is enclosed enough to feel safe, open enough to have proper sessions. Wind runs predominantly SE to S between 45° and 195°, covering a wide arc that keeps the usable window reliably open. The main season is March through June, when SE-to-S winds sit at 15–22 knots with occasional days pushing past 25. The side-onshore angle is one of Bo'ao's best features — the breeze carries you along the lagoon rather than offshore, and the lagoon's natural shelter softens any chop. Waves typically stay under a metre during the season. The water demands some attention before you rig. Low tide exposes sections of sandbar that were rideable earlier, and the channels between banks carry tidal current from the river mouth. Spend a few minutes watching the water move and pick your launch and landing zones with the flow in mind. Mangrove-lined shores mark the margins of the lagoon — give them space on downwind runs toward the edges, as they're a firm obstacle with no clean self-rescue. For accommodation, the northern coast has options within easy reach of the launch: Bo'ao Golden Coast Hot Spring Hotel, Forum For Asia Gold Coast Hotel, Narada Resort and SPA Boao, and Citadines Hope City Boao are all close by. There's a café-style spot nearby for food and drinks between sessions. The flat shallow lagoon and consistent side-onshore breeze make Bo'ao genuinely beginner-friendly, and ideal for intermediate riders after relaxed flat-water practice. Advanced riders come for the bigger days and the sandbank runs. If you're looking for a serious kite destination within China, this is the obvious call.
