Playa Coyotera sits on the southern shore of Bahía Salinas, Guanacaste's northernmost bay and one of Central America's most consistent kitesurf destinations. It's the quieter, less-visited alternative to Papaturro — a small working fishing community rather than a tourist hub, which tells you exactly what to expect: fewer riders, no kite-school infrastructure, and a noticeably rawer experience. The spot runs on the same North Tehuano winds that drive the rest of Bahía Salinas — seasonal blasts funneling down from the north that typically clock between 20 and 35 knots. The usable kite window is wide, running 170° to 350°, so you get solid working angles across most of the conditions the bay throws at you. The season runs November through June; outside that window, the Tehuano cycle winds down and the bay turns quiet. What separates Coyotera from the calmer options inside the bay is wave exposure. The outer edge catches real swell, which makes the water choppier and more dynamic than the flat-water sections you'll find elsewhere in Bahía Salinas. That's the draw if you're an intermediate or advanced rider looking for wave faces to work — but it's also the reason beginners are better off at a more sheltered spot. If your water relaunch and upwind riding aren't dialled in, the conditions here will punish the gaps. Getting to Coyotera means committing to Guanacaste's dry northwest corner. The final stretch to the beach runs through unpaved road territory in places, and a high-clearance vehicle will make the approach considerably less stressful. There are no kite schools, rental shops, or beach cafés on site — this is a working fishing community, not a resort beach. Arrive self-sufficient: kit, tools, water, and food for the day. The nearest services are back toward La Cruz and the main highway. The launch is a coastal beach setup. Before rigging, take a moment to check conditions are sitting within the 170°–350° kite window and keep a clear eye on the fishing boats that operate from this beach — give them a wide berth both on launch and while riding.
