San Juan del Sur sits on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, a compact fishing bay that has carved a name for itself as one of Central America's favourite surf towns. The kite scene here is still emerging — don't expect a packed beach school setup — but that's part of the appeal. You get a genuine bay, a fishing village atmosphere, and afternoon thermal wind that builds reliably through the peak season. The usable wind window runs from roughly south-southwest through to north-northwest (190°–350°). In practice, it's the afternoon SW thermals that do the work from December through April — Nicaragua's dry season, when the Pacific side comes alive. Wind tends to build through midday and peak in the afternoon, typically in the 12–20 knot range. That's honest thermal wind: punchier than it reads on paper, with some gustiness as it funnels around the headlands that frame the bay. The bay itself gives you a more sheltered ride than the open Pacific beaches nearby. Expect flatter water close in, with ocean influence picking up as you push further toward the mouth. For intermediates, this is a reasonable place to build confidence — the enclosed shape narrows your exposure to full Pacific swell while still giving you enough room to work with. Beginners should be aware the scene lacks dedicated kite schools and formal rescue infrastructure; come with solid self-rescue skills or bring a crew that knows what they're doing. The town is easy to reach by road from Managua, and once you arrive everything is compact and walkable. The main beach at the head of the bay is the natural launch point — a broad stretch of sand that opens up further at lower tide. There is no marked kite zone, so read the beach carefully and give swimmers and surf traffic a wide berth before you rig up. After a session, the town looks after you well. For a proper sit-down meal, El Globo Restaurante and Brisas y Marinas are solid options. If you want something lighter or a cold drink, Café del Sur, Cafe Indio del Sur, El Velero, Henry's Iguana, and El Tren are all nearby. Coffee estrella specialty is worth a stop before an early session, and La Carreta Bar and Restaurant and El Buen Gusta round out the food options when you're ready to eat. San Juan del Sur is not a kite-first destination — it's a surf town where kiting is slowly finding its feet. Come in the December–April window, bring a kite range that covers 12–20 knots, and you'll find a bay that rewards those willing to figure it out without the scaffolding of a full kite resort.
