About Viganj

Viganj sits at the western tip of the Pelješac Peninsula in southern Dalmatia, Croatia, facing the narrow channel that separates Pelješac from the island of Korčula. That 1.5 km gap is what makes this place special: it acts as a Venturi funnel, squeezing and accelerating the northwest and westerly Maestral thermal until it arrives at the beach in concentrated, reliable form. On the Pelješac Peninsula, this is Croatia's most wind-consistent kite and windsurf spot — a reputation built on geography, not luck. The village of Viganj sits right on the water, a compact Dalmatian settlement with the limestone-and-scrub-hillside backdrop typical of this stretch of coast. The launch area is a narrow beach facing the channel. Space is tight. You need to be comfortable setting up and launching efficiently without a lot of room to manoeuvre — the narrowness here isn't just logistical, it's a signal about what kind of spot this is. The Maestral thermal typically builds from around 11:00 and holds through to 19:00 on summer days, running northwest to west, which puts it side-onshore at the beach. In front of you is roughly 200 metres of flat, shallow turquoise water — ideal for carving and building speed. Beyond that, the channel deepens considerably, and currents run through the passage between Pelješac and Korčula. That transition is important. Knowing where you are on the water at all times is not optional here. On a good Maestral day, riding Viganj is excellent. The flat water rewards board technique; the wind during the thermal window is consistent and directionally steady. Freeriding, freestyle, and foiling all have room to breathe here. The side-onshore angle gives you some margin if something goes wrong in the shallows. The deeper channel does not. This is not a spot for beginners or riders still consolidating basics. Deep water, currents, and a narrow, busy launch area mean you need solid water-start and self-rescue skills before you venture into the channel. If you're still working on those, seek out somewhere with more room for error first. For facilities, Bistro Zaporat is at hand for coffee or a cold drink after the session. Divna and Luka both offer accommodation in the village — worth knowing if you want to base yourself here and make the most of the reliable summer window rather than day-tripping. Viganj is reachable by road along the Pelješac Peninsula. The village is small; once you arrive, the water is right there. Parking can be limited in peak summer — arriving before the midday Maestral builds gives you a better start.
