Playas del Este is a string of north-facing beaches stretching east of Havana — Santa María del Mar, Boca Ciega, and Guanabo among them — where northeast trade winds roll in off the water and hand kitesurfers one of Cuba's most accessible sessions. The city is your base here: the whole strip is a straightforward day trip from central Havana, which means you can combine time on the water with everything the capital has to offer rather than committing to a remote beach town. The wind is a classic Caribbean trade: northeast, typically running 12–22 knots during the October-to-April season. That north-facing shoreline suits the arc — when the trades are running, wind arrives side-shore to cross-onshore, keeping downwind drift manageable and giving you a predictable run along the beach. The water produces chop to small waves; not a big-wave venue by any stretch, but enough texture to practise upwind riding, link turns, or work on your pop without things getting out of hand. Infrastructure is essentially zero. No kite schools operate here, no rental shacks, no gear repair. If you are travelling to Havana with kitesurfing on the agenda, that is the single most important thing to absorb: bring your kite, bar, harness, and wetsuit, because sourcing any of it locally is not a realistic option. Pack your full kit and a spare bar at minimum. Getting here is straightforward. Playas del Este is a well-known beach destination so Havana taxis know the route, and local buses run the strip too. If you are renting a car, parking is available along the beach road. The sand is wide and long enough to rig comfortably with room to spare, though the beach fills up with day-trippers on weekends — arrive early, find your spot, and rig away from the main crowd before things get busy. On the water, intermediates will find the conditions honest and enjoyable. Twelve to twenty-two knots of northeast trade gives you a proper session without being punishing, and the chop-to-small-wave state keeps it engaging rather than flat. That said, the complete absence of kite rescue or on-site support means you should not ride alone. Beginners are better served finding a coached introduction rather than freelancing it here. Post-session, Restaurante Roberto is the facility on record near the beach. Cuba operates at its own tempo, so build buffer into your plans. Season is October through April. Outside that window the trades ease and conditions become unreliable. Plan your trip within that window and Playas del Este delivers steady wind and a destination that most kitesurfers never get to tick off their list.
