About Varadero / Punta Hicacos

Varadero / Punta Hicacos sits at the narrow tip of the Varadero Peninsula in Matanzas province, where a thin strip of sand separates the exposed Atlantic-facing north coast from the sheltered Bahía de Cárdenas to the south. That geography is the whole story: two completely different bodies of water within a short walk of each other, making this the most versatile kite destination on the island. The north side catches the full force of the northeast trade wind, which runs reliably from November through July at 15–25 knots. With the usable wind arc spanning 225° through 45°, the cross-on breeze hits the beach cleanly and the water out front carries real chop and short wind-swell. This is the side for riders who want to cover ground, work on powered riding, or push their wave skills. The tradeoff is exposure — when the trade is on, it's committed, and you'll want a clear downwinder plan before you launch. Flip to the south and you're on Bahía de Cárdenas: flat, shallow, warm, and significantly more forgiving. Learners and freestylers chasing underpowered technique will find this side far more comfortable. Both Cubakiters and Escuela Caribeña run operations out of Punta Hicacos — two of the island's established kite schools. If you're coming to Cuba to learn or dial in board skills, starting south is the sensible call, and the schools will point you to current launch spots, which can shift with season and sand movement. The wind season runs November through July, with the trade most reliable through the winter and spring months. August through October is hurricane season — not a time to book a kite trip. Within season, 15–25 knots is the working range, so a quiver covering that spread serves well on most days. Getting to the peninsula is straightforward — Varadero is Cuba's most accessible beach resort with regular tourist transfers available. Once you're on the spit, local knowledge matters: signage is inconsistent and conditions vary by launch point, so checking in with either school on arrival saves time. For post-session needs, the resort strip delivers: Bar de Tapas, La Tasca, Casa de Al, and Marisquería handle food; Beach Bar Kawama, Brocal, Colina, Lobby Bar "Fortuna", and Pool Bar "El Dorado" cover drinks. Pizza Caribe is there for something quick. Pricing reflects the tourist economy rather than local rates. Cuba adds logistical wrinkles most Caribbean destinations don't. Card payments are unreliable, so bring cash in a widely accepted foreign currency to exchange locally. Importing kite equipment can complicate customs, and the schools typically offer rental gear — worth considering if you're travelling light. Factor extra time into any day plan; the island runs on its own schedule.
