Varadero sits at the tip of the Hicacos Peninsula, a 20-kilometre strip of white sand stretching northeast into the Caribbean off Cuba's north coast. It's the country's most developed resort zone, and that infrastructure works in your favour: the main kite launch is at the Barcelona Marina Palace Hotel end of the peninsula, where you have space, services, and the right setup for getting on the water. Getting here is a straightforward 145 kilometres from Havana — typically a couple of hours by road. Most riders base in Varadero itself, staying in one of the resort hotels that line the peninsula, which keeps logistics simple and everything close. The wind runs NE at 15–20 knots through the November-to-April season — the classic Caribbean trade pattern. The Hicacos Peninsula is well positioned to catch it, and the usable kite window runs from 270° to 90°, west through north to east, which puts the NE trades squarely in the rideable arc. Before you launch, check the forecast direction: winds from the south or southwest sit outside that window and push you toward open water. Conditions on the water run flat to choppy depending on the day. This is not a wave destination — it's a freestyling and freeriding stretch with reliable, manageable water under your board. The signature session here is the downwinder: 25 kilometres along the peninsula with the NE breeze behind you and the resort coast running alongside. It's one of the longer downwinder runs in the Caribbean, and it moves well in a solid trade. Sort out your return transport before you set off — a taxi or resort transfer — because there's no short way back. The resort facilities genuinely support a kiting stay. Food and drinks are close to the beach throughout the day: Barbacoa and Dante for a sit-down meal, Bar Varadero 1920 and Cafetería Palma Real when you want something quicker. The all-inclusive hotel model means you're rarely far from water, food, or shade, which counts after a long downwinder run. Intermediates and above will get the most from Varadero. The consistent NE trades and flat-to-choppy water are forgiving on skill, but the downwinder logistics and the need to read wind direction before launching mean you need to handle yourself. Beginners should ride with an experienced buddy or seek instruction through the resort hotels. November through April is the season — outside that window, expect lighter and less consistent conditions.
