Jan Thiel Lagoon sits tucked into the southeastern corner of Curaçao, sheltered behind a natural reef that keeps the water glassy while the trade wind blows freely overhead. It's one of the most organised kite spots in the Dutch Caribbean — predictable, flat, and warm, with kite schools on the beach and cold drinks never far away. Getting there from Willemstad is a short drive east along the southern coast to Jan Thiel Bay. The beach area is well-developed, with the kite zone set up alongside proper beach facilities. Jan Thiel Beach Club anchors the social side of things, and restaurants including Agave Bar y Taqueria and Mojitos & Bites are within reach of the water. The wind here is the eastern trade wind, running E to NE year-round at 15–25 knots. That consistent arc — between 90° and 270° — puts you on solid side or side-onshore conditions across the lagoon. Because the reef breaks the ocean swell before it reaches you, chop stays manageable even when the wind picks up toward the top of that range. The water is warm — Caribbean-warm, no wetsuit required — and the flat conditions make this forgiving territory for learners and intermediates who want genuine time on the water without getting worked by open-ocean swell. Peak season runs May through July, when the trades typically blow their most reliably. That said, Curaçao sits firmly in the trade-wind belt, which means usable sessions happen well outside peak months — this is not a spot that goes dormant in the off-season. The kite zone is genuinely organised, not just a beach with a cluster of riders. Advanced freeriders chasing waves or big air will find the lagoon limiting, but that's not what Jan Thiel is built for.
