About Sint Joris Bay

Sint Joris Bay sits on the north-east coast of Curaçao. The bay forms a protected lagoon roughly 2 kilometres across in both directions — flat, shallow, and sheltered from the Atlantic swell by the surrounding headlands. It is widely regarded as the best kitesurf spot on the island, and the wind statistics back that up: around 300 days a year carry a workable breeze, most of them driven by the E/NE trade wind blowing steadily at 17–22 knots directly onto the beach. The kite schools are based at the beach, so arriving and getting set up is straightforward. Two schools operate here — Awa Salu kiteboarding and Nix kitesurf school — both offering lessons and equipment rentals. If you are travelling light or just want to try gear before committing to a purchase, equipment is available on-site. The usable kite window runs from 50° to 150°, meaning northeast through east to southeast winds all keep the kite over the water on launch. The E/NE trade winds that sit squarely in this arc are the engine of the bay: consistent, typically onshore, and rarely gusty in the way that open Atlantic spots can be. For anyone learning to kite, the combination of flat water, shallow depths, and steady breeze is about as good as it gets in the Caribbean. Intermediate and advanced riders get clean flat-water conditions suited to freestyle and freeride. The lagoon — roughly 2×2 km — gives you room to work upwind and downwind without running into a boundary before you have built any momentum. Water depth stays shallow across much of the bay, which keeps chop minimal and makes water restarts and self-rescue manageable. That shallowness also means you can stand up almost anywhere if your kite comes down — useful early in a progression curve. The sandy bottom presents no hard obstacles underfoot under normal conditions. Wind reliability is one of Sint Joris Bay's strongest arguments. At 300-plus wind days a year, a blank day is the exception rather than the rule. Curaçao sits outside the main Caribbean hurricane belt, so the bay stays usable across more of the calendar than many other Caribbean destinations. Book lessons or rental gear in advance during peak season — the bay's reputation draws riders from across the island and instructor slots fill up.
