About Dahab — Assalah Beach

Dahab sits on Egypt's Sinai Peninsula where desert mountains drop into the Red Sea, and Assalah Beach at the northern end of town is one of those kite spots that earns its reputation honestly. The reef-protected lagoon delivers flat, turquoise water when the NNE wind is running — which, during the April-to-October season, it frequently is. Assalah is the traditional, northern part of Dahab — less packaged than the resort end of the peninsula, more local and more lived-in. The beach strip here is compact and walkable, lined with camps, cafes, and kite operations, so getting your gear to the water is never a production. Most riders base themselves nearby and walk down. The launch is from the beach at the lagoon edge. The fringing reef does the work of keeping the water flat and protected, particularly at medium to high tide — that's when the spot looks its best and rides most smoothly. As the tide drops, more reef comes into play, so timing your session around mid-to-high is worth the effort. Wind runs from the north-northeast into the lagoon across the full 0° to 180° arc, coming in onshore and filling the kite window cleanly when it's on. Advanced riders only — and that's not a general caution. This is a spot where the reef demands real experience. Shallow sections and coral hazards are present, and reef boots are standard kit here, not optional. Know your kite-down procedure and know how to handle a reef entry and exit before you go solo. When you get it right, it's genuinely striking. Flat, fast water in shades of blue-green, clear Sinai air, and the kind of scenery that earns the iconic turquoise label attached to Dahab everywhere. Flat-water freestylers and foilers who can handle the reef will find a lot to like. Facilities are stacked along the strip. 5 SQUARES - Windsurf & Kite & Wing & Foil Center covers lessons, gear rental, and local briefings. For food, Al Sharkawy, Darwish, El Garden Stars, and both Cafe Del Sur spots — one a coffee-and-bakes setup, one a full cafe, restaurant, and art gallery — are all close to the water. Apaduka, Arabian Tea & Coffee, and Blue Beach Club are solid for a coffee or something cold between sessions. Assala Camp handles accommodation if you want to stay steps from the beach. Dahab moves at its own pace: slower than a resort town, more honest, better value. Assalah is where that character is most concentrated — which is exactly why kitesurfers keep coming back.
