About Algajola

Algajola sits in the Gulf of Calvi on the northwest coast of Corsica, a small bay with a sandy beach and a developed coastal town sitting right behind it. Restaurants, hotels, and the general infrastructure of a functioning Corsican commune are within easy reach of the water's edge — this is not a wild, hard-to-reach spot. The bay sits in a relatively sheltered Mediterranean setting, but the wind finds it reliably when conditions align. The approach is straightforward. The coastal road runs directly through town, and multiple hotels sit within 100 metres of the waterfront. Hotel Casa Alice and Hôtel de la plage Santa Vittoria are practically on the sand, meaning you can be rigging up minutes after dropping your bags. Casa nostra and Casarena are within a few hundred metres for a meal before or after the session. The usable wind window runs from 140° to 320°, covering the SW-to-NW range. The Libeccio — the southwest-to-west wind — comes in onshore and is the headline condition at Algajola. When a low develops over the Gulf of Genoa, the combination of swell and Libeccio sets up an excellent wave session on this southwest-facing beach. The Maestrale, the northwest wind characteristic of the western Mediterranean, runs sideshore and provides cleaner flat-water freeride conditions once you're past the shorebreak. Summer afternoons typically bring thermal winds in the 10 to 18 knot range — consistent, predictable, and the most reliable window in the peak season. The sandy bottom is shallow, with the shallows extending 300 to 500 metres from the shore. That's the primary thing to manage here: wipeouts and bodydrags in knee-depth water carry real risk. Shorebreak is present across the spot and gets more pronounced when the Maestrale is running, so timing your launch and landing is worth taking seriously. Neither hazard is unmanageable, but together they push Algajola into the intermediate bracket — not the place to figure out water starts. The season runs April through October, with summer afternoons the most consistent bet for thermal wind. Wave sessions depend on Gulf of Genoa pressure patterns and arrive on their own schedule. Accommodation clusters close to the beach — Hôtel de la Plage les Arcades, Hôtel Beau Rivage, Ferienhotel Maristella, and Hôtel L'Ondine are all in the mix — and Camping de la Plage sits about a kilometre back for those keeping costs down. A ROTA rounds out the options at around 1.8km, still accessible after a session.
