La Madrague sits on the Atlantic coast of Anglet, a town that runs immediately north of Biarritz along the Basque coast of southwestern France. The beach faces due west into the open Atlantic, which is exactly why the local kite community keeps coming back — SW through NW winds roll in onshore and unobstructed, and when conditions align, there are proper Atlantic waves to play with. Getting there from Biarritz is a short drive north along the coast road. Anglet's beach strip is long and broken into named sections; La Madrague is the main kite zone. Parking is typically available in the beach car parks, though in summer you'll want to arrive early. From the car park, the beach is a short walk. The launch area is a west-facing Atlantic beach — and the Atlantic doesn't mess around here. When swell is running, the shore-break can be punishing, and that's not a detail to gloss over. This is an expert wave-kiting spot because of that shore-break. Body-dragging in through broken whitewater, relaunching in the impact zone, timing your exit through the surf — these are real skills you'll need before you show up. If you're still working on your water relaunches, this is not the place to figure them out. Once you're out past the break, the water opens up for proper wave riding. The wind arc runs from 180° through to 0° (south through west to north), with SW through NW being the sweet spot for onshore conditions. The local kite community is active, with sessions running weekdays and weekends — a reliable sign that the spot delivers consistently enough to keep people returning. One hazard worth flagging specifically: Cavaliers beach, just along the coast, becomes a problem in SW winds. That wind angle pushes you toward the dike, making it a spot to avoid in those conditions. Stick to La Madrague and get a read on local conditions before launching. On the facilities side, Club Glisse Surf School Anglet is about 234m from the water and École de surf Uhaina is about 308m away — both useful if you want a lesson or some grounded local guidance before your first session. For food and drink, CHICKEN'S is about 115m away and Eric à la plage is 189m out, with Apérock Café just 146m from the beach. Chez Denise is a restaurant option roughly 590m away.
