Sokoa sits on the western shoulder of the Saint-Jean-de-Luz bay, a partially sheltered stretch of Basque coastline where the Atlantic pushes in from the west. The bay faces W, which puts NW-to-W winds squarely in the prime window — and that is exactly what this spot needs to work at its best. Conditions here are for advanced intermediates upward; some swell penetrates around the bay entrance, so arriving expecting a flat, forgiving lagoon will likely disappoint you. Getting to Sokoa means heading to the port area on the western side of the bay. The industrial port setting gives it a more functional, less glamorous feel than the beachside towns nearby, but that also means it tends to be quieter. The launch area is coastal and port-adjacent — pump your kite with that in mind and keep an eye on your lines on the approach. This is not a broad sandy beach setup. Once you're in the water, the riding character is wave-oriented. Moderate waves come through, particularly when NW-W swell is running — which, conveniently, often arrives with the same wind direction that makes the spot work. That combination can be genuinely enjoyable for riders comfortable in surf and able to read variable conditions. The usable wind arc runs 190°–10°, a wide sweep from south through west and north, with the sweet spot firmly in the NW-W quadrant. Wind comes good from April through October. The best days tend to be NW-W at 15–25 knots — enough power to ride well without conditions turning unpredictable at the bay entrance. Outside of that window, or for anyone still building confidence in waves, this is a spot to skip rather than push through marginal conditions. On the facilities side, the area is reasonably well set up. Three kite schools operate here — Boutique 21 / Bakun école de surf, Chica Beach, and École de surf Français Hendaia — useful for local knowledge, lessons, or kit questions. For food, Atalaia, Café Garra, and Chez Mattin cover sit-down meals with a Basque flavour. Bar Marinela, Bittor, Bizipoz Bar, and Bocata handle the post-session café and bar side. The broader Saint-Jean-de-Luz area carries a strong surf culture, and the concentration of wave-focused schools in the vicinity reflects the riding scene here. It is not a beginner spot by any measure, but for a rider who has earned their wave stripes and wants genuine Basque Coast character, Sokoa is worth the drive.
