Cabourg sits at the eastern end of Calvados' grand Belle Époque coastline — a resort town that Marcel Proust immortalised as 'Balbec' in his novels. The beach here is wide, flat, and sandy: a proper Channel strand that faces northwest toward the open sea. That orientation is what makes it worth knowing as a kite spot. SW and NW winds hit onshore or sideshore across a generous expanse with good run-outs, giving you room to work with if a session goes sideways. Getting there is uncomplicated. Cabourg is well connected to Caen and the wider Deauville coast. The town centre is compact and beach access is direct from the seafront promenade. Parking exists along the front and in town — in summer it goes early, but from autumn onward, when the winds tend to show up properly, space is rarely a problem. The launch area is the beach itself: wide, flat sand where you can lay out lines without crowding swimmers or walkers. The spot is reportedly less regulated than nearby Merville-Franceville, which is a genuine practical advantage — fewer restrictions means you can focus on reading conditions rather than checking your position against a seasonal exclusion zone. That said, always scan local beach signage on arrival, especially in summer when tourist pressure increases. The usable wind window runs from SW through W and NW to NE (225°–45°). The money directions are the westerlies and northwesterlies that funnel in off the Channel; a solid SW'ly is sideshore and also workable. Autumn and winter deliver the strongest and most reliable winds — summer tends to be lighter and the beach is busier. Channel winds close to shore can be gusty and variable, so reading a session carefully before launching is just good practice. The water is Channel: cold for much of the year, with chop building quickly when the wind has fetch across the sea. A proper wetsuit is non-negotiable for most of the year. The flat sandy beach and gradual entry make for a forgiving launch, but the Channel can deteriorate faster than expected. This is an intermediate spot — comfortable riding in gusty, variable conditions and solid self-rescue are prerequisites, not extras. For food and rest, the town delivers well. L'Instant Plage and Bar de la Mer are the most convenient beach-side options. Café des Arts, Hôtel Le Celtic, and Auberge de l'Abbaye add more variety in town. Accommodation ranges from La Villa sur la Plage and Hôtel des Falaises for character close to the water, through Hôtel Outre-Mer — a boutique hotel facing the sea with a salon de thé and bar lounge — to Le Cottage for something quieter and ibis Styles Deauville Villers Plage for a reliable chain option.
