Houlgate sits on the Calvados stretch of the Normandy coast — the Côte Fleurie — between the chalk and clay cliffs of the Vaches Noires to the east and the broader resort strip running toward Deauville. The beach here is wide and sandy at low tide, typical of the Norman Channel shoreline, and the tidal range is significant enough that it shapes your entire session plan: arrive without checking the tide tables and you may find a thin strip of wet sand where you expected a broad launch flat. The wind arc runs from west-southwest through north to east-northeast (260°–80°), which lines up well with the prevailing westerlies and northwesterlies that sweep in off the Atlantic and funnel through the English Channel. Northerly and north-easterly shifts are also usable. Southerly quadrant winds sit outside the window, so if the forecast is showing S or SW with a big southerly component, this probably isn't your day here. Access to Houlgate is easy enough — it's a proper small resort town with good road links from Caen and Deauville, and seafront parking is available. The walk to the water varies considerably with the tide: low water exposes a generous flat beach and gives you room to rig and launch clear of obstacles; high water compresses that space considerably. Build your session around the tide, not just the wind. That said, the English Channel has its own character: tidal flow is a real factor, the water can carry genuine chop, and conditions can change faster than sunnier Mediterranean spots. On a solid westerly or northwesterly day, the riding is open and energetic — sandy seabed, variable texture depending on tide state, and room to work the window. It's not a glassy flatwater paradise, but if you want powered Channel kitesurfing with a classic Norman resort backdrop, this delivers. After the session, Houlgate punches above its size for a small town. L'Ambiance and L'Annexe cover post-session drinks; for food you've got Le Normand, L'Eden, L'Arbre à Pin, I Fratelli, Aux Bains Fleuris, and Hansel & Gretel all within the town. Hôtel de la Plage works if you're staying overnight and want to stay close to the water.
