Merville-Franceville sits at the mouth of the Orne river on the Normandy coast, and its beach stretches for seven kilometres of open sand — the kind of run that makes visiting riders do a double-take when they first arrive. This is the only officially authorised kitesurfing beach in the Calvados department, which gives it a status the locals are proud of and take seriously. The beach faces roughly northwest across the Channel, and the usable kite window runs from southwest through north to roughly northeast. Northwest to northeast is the preferred direction here — NE in particular gets a natural boost as it funnels through the Orne estuary, delivering more consistency and a bit of extra punch than the raw forecast suggests. When southwest dominates, the Baie de Sallenelles on the estuary side offers a practical alternative rather than grinding out a session on a bad angle. Tide changes everything. At high water, the beach narrows and the water deepens off the shore — better for freeride, cruising runs and anyone who wants proper depth under them. Drop the tide and you get wide, flat sand stretching well out, which is ideal for freestyle and for beginners working on body-drags and first water starts without worrying about depth or chop. The progression spectrum is genuinely broad here across all levels, which is partly why Kite-R Evolution operates on this beach — a local school that can get first-timers launched or help experienced riders dial in their freestyle game. The water character is typical of the Channel coast: chop rather than clean ocean swell most of the time, with the estuary mouth adding some texture when the tide is on the push or pull. It's not the place to expect mirror-flat conditions, but when NE winds are running and the tide is cooperating, the riding is hard to fault over that kind of sand run. After getting out of the water, the village has solid options within reach. Le Lodge and Le Merville work well for a coffee or something cold. For food, L'Escapade, L'Artimon, and La Crêpit'roll cover different bases — from a proper sit-down to a crepe in hand. KM Burger and Novoli are there when you want quick and filling. Brasserie du Village and L'Atrium round out the options when the group wants to decompress longer. Year-round riding is technically possible, and being Normandy's primary kite beach means there's usually someone around — which matters if conditions turn awkward. But the Channel has its own character and the tide windows move fast.
