About Étang de La Palme

Étang de La Palme is a salt lagoon sitting just south of the village of La Palme along the Occitanie coastline, connected to the Mediterranean through a natural channel. It belongs to a chain of coastal lagoons that define this corner of southern France, and it has built a quiet but solid reputation among kiters for a straightforward reason: the water is flat and the spot works for virtually every level. The lagoon is sheltered enough that even when the wind is running hard, you're not wrestling with open Mediterranean swell. Two winds drive the session calendar here: the Tramontane, a strong northwesterly that funnels down from the Pyrenees through the Aude corridor, and the Marin, the southerly sea breeze that builds through the warmer months. The usable kite window runs from roughly northeast to southwest (45°–215°), and both of these local winds sit squarely within it for the main riding area on the lagoon. The season runs March through October. Shoulder months — spring and early autumn — tend to offer some of the most consistent wind without the summer congestion. This stretch of the Languedoc coast pulls a lot of visitors in July and August, so early morning sessions before the day hots up are worth the alarm call. Having schools on-site means beginners can get proper tuition and rental gear without logistical headaches, and it keeps the launch zones reasonably organised.
