Lac de Saint-Cassien sits in the Var hinterland about 30 kilometres inland from Cannes, tucked into the rolling hills of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It's a freshwater reservoir rather than the open sea you might expect in the South of France, which changes the whole character of the session — flat, glassy water, no saltwater spray, and a thermal cycle that builds reliably through the afternoon. You want to set up in the northern arm, known as the Fayence branch. That's where the wind angle works with you and where kiters tend to gather during the season. There's no formally regulated kite zone on the lake, so you share the water with swimmers, paddle-boarders and other recreational users — common sense and situational awareness matter more here than at a dedicated kite beach. The wind is a SW to W thermal driven by the daily heating of the surrounding Provençal hills. It typically builds from early afternoon, with the usable kite window running from 225° around to 45°. Expect 12 to 20 knots on a solid afternoon from May through September. It's not a high-wind storm spot, but the thermal is consistent enough to plan a session around once you've read the pattern over a few visits. Flat freshwater is the real draw. There's virtually no chop when the wind is in its normal range, which makes this a popular destination for foilers — the glassy surface rewards anyone on a foil board and the lighter end of the wind window is entirely manageable on bigger kite sizes. Twin-tips work well too, especially for practising transitions or drills. The beginner-to-intermediate billing is honest: the flat water genuinely lowers the barrier compared to an ocean launch, and the thermal's predictable build makes it easier to read than the gusty coastal spots further south. That said, inland thermals have their own character. The wind builds progressively but can drop off sooner than you expect when the heating cycle breaks down in late afternoon. Watch the sky over the hills — if clouds start building, start thinking about your exit. The thermal can also have a localised edge depending on the surrounding topography, so your first session is partly a reconnaissance. Facilities at the lake itself are limited — this is a reservoir rather than a developed kite beach, so arrive self-sufficient with everything you need for a full session. Nearby villages offer the basics, but the spot doesn't have dedicated kite infrastructure. The season runs May through September. High summer brings the most consistent thermals but also the most activity on the water. May, June and September often deliver reliable wind with noticeably less traffic, making them the sweet spot for a more relaxed session.
