Sitting at the very tip of the Presqu'île du Mazet, where the Rhône finally empties into the Gulf of Lions, Plage Napoléon is one of those spots that rewards riders who make the effort to find it. Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône — an industrial port town at first glance — guards the access, but once you clear the town and reach the spit, the landscape opens into something genuinely wild: a sandy delta beach where the river meets the open sea, with little between you and the horizon. The approach takes you out onto a narrow sand spit at the river mouth. It's an isolated, natural setting — no beach clubs, no crowds, no sun loungers. Just sand, water, and wind. Parking is available along the track out to the spit; the terrain is flat and the walk to the waterline is short. The water is the headline here: shallow flat water that you can stand in for hundreds of metres out. It's the kind of spot that makes learning new tricks feel less consequential — a stumble or a bad landing, and your feet are on the ground. Intermediates will find it forgiving; beginners working on water starts and body dragging will likely love it. The wind you want here is the marine or E-SE breeze — it blows onshore across the flat water and typically comes in gentle and regular, making it more predictable than many Provençal spots. This isn't a screaming, overpowered session venue; it's a place where smooth, flowing riding suits the conditions. The wind you do not want is the Mistral. The famous Provençal northerly blows offshore at this spot, meaning it'll push you away from shore and out to sea if you're not watching. When the forecast shows Mistral, this is not the day to be at Plage Napoléon unless you know what you're doing and have a solid water re-launch. Check your forecast carefully before committing. After a session, Port-Saint-Louis has a handful of places to eat and drink: Chez Toinou, Le Cabanon, Le Passeport, Le Bistro de la Tour, and Pizzeria de la Tour are among the options in town, along with Jack Pub for a post-session drink. It's a working port town, not a tourist resort, but the food options are there. This spot suits anyone who wants flat water without the bustle — a quiet corner of the Camargue coast that largely keeps itself to itself. Come with the marine breeze, respect the Mistral flag on the forecast, and you'll have the kind of uncrowded session that's getting harder to find on the Mediterranean coast.
