About Saint-Florent · La Roya

La Roya sits on the southern shore of the Gulf of Saint-Florent, a broad bay on Corsica's northern cape. The beach faces WNW, looking out across the gulf toward its open mouth, with the hill-backed coast curving around to the southwest and the town of Saint-Florent — a compact Corsican harbour town of boats, restaurants, and summer visitors — just along from the northern end of the bay. Getting here takes commitment. Saint-Florent sits in a notch of Corsica's northern coastline, reached by a winding road from Bastia or from the island's interior — it's not on a main through-route. Build in travel time with gear in tow, and aim early in high season: parking near the beach fills up once the town gets busy. The wind that really works here is westerly — onshore, consistent, and clean when it's blowing. The WNW-facing orientation puts a W wind right in front of you as you rig: lines run out to sea, pressure is predictable, and you have room to work with. This is the wind the spot was built for. The SW Libeccio is a different proposition. Cross-offshore here, and rolling over the hills that back the coast, it arrives gusty and uneven — strong in the gusts, patchy in the lulls. Experienced riders can work it with careful gear choices and a watchful eye, but those still building downwind self-rescue skills should treat it with caution. Summer afternoons can bring light thermals when the gradient wind hasn't committed. Lower-pressure sessions, good for bigger kites and relaxed riding — but worth a last check before you launch, since thermals can be variable. The usable kite window runs 195° (SSW) through west and northwest to 15° (NNE). West is the sweet spot inside that arc. SSW–SW pushes toward Libeccio territory; N–NNE sits at the window's edge. Water inside the gulf is contained. Limited fetch means shorter, choppier water rather than open-ocean swell — manageable for freeriding, but don't expect glassy conditions. Facilities are a genuine asset here. Within reach of the beach you'll find bars and cafés: b sisters, Casanova, Comptoir de l'Europe, L'escale, L'Orsu Biancu, and La Vista. Restaurants include Cala Roya, La Gaffe, La roya, and Le Grill further along the coast. Saint-Florent town itself adds the wider range of services you'd expect from a well-visited Corsican harbour.
