About Epirus Surf Center

The Epirus Surf Center sits on the Ionian coastline near Preveza in northwestern Greece — a long, sandy beach where westerly and north-westerly winds roll in off open water with useful regularity. The surrounding Epirus plain is flat and low, which means little terrain to disrupt the wind flow once it fills in from the right direction. Getting there: Preveza is the nearest town, and the Kanali beach area sits just south of it along the coast. The approach is straightforward — flat agricultural land giving way to shoreline, with parking available near the beach. Once you're there, the beach itself has the open, uncluttered character that makes rigging and launching relatively uncomplicated. The usable wind window runs from west to north-northwest, roughly 247° to 337°. That means the breeze comes predominantly off the Ionian Sea with good fetch behind it — expect cleaner, less turbulent air on those headings compared to onshore spots sheltered by hills. When the westerly fills in, the launch looks manageable with ample room to kite up on the beach without major obstacles overhead or immediately downwind. Water character along this stretch tends to be relatively calm close to shore, typical for this sheltered section of the Ionian coast. Further out conditions can build as the wind strengthens. On sea-breeze days the wind can be gusty, particularly at the outer edges of the wind arc — assess conditions on arrival rather than assuming the morning forecast holds all day. Skill level: the presence of an on-site kite school (Epirus Surf Center) makes this genuinely accessible for beginners working with instruction. Intermediates should find the westerly conditions approachable on moderate days. Advanced riders will want to time visits to the stronger north-westerly sessions when the Ionian really delivers. Facilities are well covered. Taverna Ta Platanakia is essentially on the doorstep at around 32 metres — post-session food is a short walk in kite boots. Medousa Beach Bar is similarly close at roughly 52 metres, handling the cold-drink situation without drama. Palmos Beach Bar is about 1.2 km along the beach for a longer stroll. Nalú Beach Bar, Barracuda Beach Bar, IL POSTO BEACHBAR KANALI PREVEZA, and Blue Island Bar round out the eating and drinking options in the area. For accommodation, both Acrogiali and Camping Asterias are in the vicinity, covering options from organised camping to something more comfortable. The Epirus Surf Center is the operational hub — contact them ahead of arrival to confirm gear rental availability and what conditions have been like. The Ionian coast gets its most reliable thermal and sea-breeze cycles through summer, though shoulder seasons can also produce useful north-westerly flow. This is not a trade-wind destination, but on a good westerly day it is a well-supported, legitimate spot with everything you need within walking distance.
