About Golden Beach / Chrissi Akti (Paros)

Golden Beach — known locally as Chrissi Akti, meaning 'Golden Coast' — sits on the south-east coast of Paros, one of the Cyclades' most consistent wind destinations. The beach earns its name: a long, wide stretch of golden sand curving around a bay that opens predominantly northward, which is exactly where the Meltemi wants to come from. The Meltemi is the defining force here. This seasonal north wind sets up across the Aegean from June through September, and at Golden Beach it arrives onshore from the north. Mornings typically bring moderate conditions — a good window to warm up or take a lesson — before the wind builds through the afternoon toward 20–30 knots. At the northern end of the beach the wind runs more side-shore, which is the preferred zone for kiters; move toward the centre and it becomes progressively more onshore. The wind range sits between 4–8 Beaufort across the season, so you'll want a quiver rather than a single kite if you're staying a while. The water is shallow and sandy, which makes it genuinely forgiving for learning and re-launching. There's plenty of room to set up on the beach, though this spot is famous for hosting the annual PWA Windsurfing World Cup — during event periods the beach gets busy and the water fills with some seriously fast kit, so plan around that if you can. Approach-wise, Golden Beach is well-signposted from the main road on the east coast of Paros. Worth noting: it is entirely distinct from Pounta beach on the south-west coast, a common mix-up that's worth clearing up before you load the car. The beach is wide enough that gear rigging doesn't need to happen in anyone's way, and parking is available at the top of the beach. On the water, the shallow sandy bottom and the onshore angle at the centre means self-rescue is manageable, and you're unlikely to be pushed far offshore. The northern end gives a better side-shore angle if you're riding upwind — use that section when you can. In peak Meltemi conditions the chop builds, so don't expect flat water, but the consistent pressure makes for satisfying powered riding once you're dialled in. KITESURF n' CHILL operates on the beach and is the local go-to for lessons, gear rental, or a quick equipment check. The beachfront food and drink scene is solid: CABANA Beach Bar Restaurant, Marabou beach bar, Lefkiano, and Agnantio cover most hunger and thirst situations, with O Kostos for coffee and drinks. If you want to stay close to the action, Golden Beach Hotel, Captain's Rocks hotel, Golden Beach of Paros, and Golden Sand Paros are all right on the doorstep — handy when you want to be first on the water before the afternoon Meltemi hits its stride. Best season runs June through September. July and August typically deliver the strongest and most reliable wind; June and September tend to be lighter and quieter, which works well if you prefer not to be overpowered every session.
