Mikri Vigla sits on the mid-west coast of Naxos, tucked into a west-facing bay right where the island narrows toward Paros. That geography is the whole story: the channel between Naxos and Paros acts as a natural funnel, squeezing the Meltemi through and pushing wind strength noticeably above what the rest of the island sees — typically 5 to 10 knots above the island average on a given day. When the rest of Naxos is marginal, Mikri Vigla is often already on. The wind arrives from the north to northwest, tracking side-onshore from the right. That angle is one of the cleaner setups you'll find anywhere in the Aegean: you launch off the sandy beach with the wind naturally carrying you out, and when you come back in, the same angle brings you back to the sand you started from. The geometry just works. The water is flat to choppy. The strait doesn't produce long ocean swell; instead you get short, manageable chop that beginners can handle and intermediates can use to practice without getting thrown over serious waves. On gustier Meltemi days the chop builds, but it stays within reach. Over 240 windy days per year makes this one of the more reliable spots in the South Aegean. June through September is the peak window — when the Meltemi runs strongest and most consistently — but conditions are possible year-round, and the shoulder months can be surprisingly good.
