About Ialysos (Rhodes)

Ialysos sits on the west coast of Rhodes, roughly 10 kilometres south of Rhodes city along the coast road. The bay faces open water to the west, which gives it an unobstructed fetch and makes it one of the most consistent kite spots in the Aegean. It's also one of the largest — several big kite and windsurf centres operate side by side here, making it an obvious destination whether you're travelling with your own gear or need to hire. The beach is sandy and gently sloping, with a shallow zone stretching out about 20 metres before the water deepens. That gradual entry is forgiving for self-rescue and easier on beginners' ankles during waterstart drills, though you'll need to walk a bit before you can body-drag out without touching down. Wind here is driven by the Meltemi, the classic summer north-westerly that defines riding across the eastern Mediterranean. It arrives cross-onshore from the left — northwest — giving you a safe angle with plenty of upwind room and a clear escape route out to sea if something goes wrong. Mornings tend to be light or calm; the breeze typically builds to 15–25 kt through the afternoon, sometimes holding into early evening. The pattern is reliable through peak summer but can flatten out for a day or two, particularly at the season's shoulders. The season runs May through October, with June to September delivering the most consistent conditions. Outside those months, expect lighter and patchier wind. Nearshore water is generally flat thanks to the shallow gradient, with a small chop developing further out once the afternoon Meltemi fills in. There's no significant swell reaching the bay during the season, which keeps conditions manageable for most riders. The usable kite window runs from 289° to 109°, covering northwest through east-southeast — the prevailing Meltemi direction sits comfortably inside it. Getting there is straightforward: about a 15-minute drive south from Rhodes city, and the cluster of kite centres makes the spot easy to identify. Parking is available near the beach. Facilities on the strip are solid. For drinks and a break between sessions, Absolut Bar, Alkionis Sport Bar & Grill, Amphiteater Bar, and Apollon Pool Bar are all close. Bella Maria Pizzeria and Alea Snack Bar cover food. If you want to base yourself within walking distance of the water, Alea Hotel Apartments and the Afrodite, Apollon, and Artemis Wings are nearby options. Skill-level wise, the cross-onshore angle and shallow entry make Ialysos workable for confident beginners, particularly during the lighter morning window. The typical afternoon 15–25 kt range is better suited to intermediates and above. With multiple schools operating here, lessons and gear hire are easy to arrange on the day.
