About Masouri Beach (Kalymnos)

Masouri sits on the west coast of Kalymnos, tucked directly below the limestone crags that have made this island famous in the climbing world. The beach faces across a narrow channel toward Telendos — that dramatic slab of rock that looks like it was sheared clean off Kalymnos itself — and it is that geography that makes this spot work as a kitesurfing launch. The Meltemi, the Aegean's prevailing northwesterly, funnels through the gap between the two islands and hits the beach with strong, consistent side-shore conditions. The usable kite window runs 180°–0°, giving you a solid cross-shore arc, and when the Meltemi is running properly, it is genuinely running. This is not a spot for light-wind cruising — the channel effect tends to amplify what is already coming off the Aegean, and you want to be comfortable in powered-up, side-shore conditions before you set up here. Getting to Masouri is straightforward. The village is one of the main resort strips on Kalymnos and easy to reach along the west-coast road from the port town of Pothia. The beach sits right at the waterfront. Parking is available in the village, though the area draws significant summer tourism — mainly climbers — so the beachfront can get crowded during peak season. The launch is directly from the beach, west-facing into the channel. With the Meltemi coming from the northwest, the wind hits at an angle that creates clean side-shore conditions, manageable for entry and exit. That said, assess the channel before you launch — Telendos sits relatively close offshore and the water between the two islands can get active when conditions build. Know where you are going if you need to come in fast. Riding here is punchy and directional. In a proper Meltemi the chop in the channel is short and fast rather than long and rolly, and sessions tend to be quick and physical. The water can get confused where the funnel effect meets any residual swell, so situational awareness matters, particularly toward the downwind edge of your window. There are no dedicated kite facilities at Masouri — no listed school, rental, or rigging infrastructure — but the village has cafes, restaurants, and accommodation within easy walking distance of the water. Sort your gear before you arrive. Masouri is a spot for intermediate riders and above who are confident in strong, funnelled, side-shore conditions.
