About Lakki Bay (Leros)

Lakki Bay sits on the western flank of Leros in the South Aegean, one of the smaller Dodecanese islands. The bay is broad and well-protected, offering a sheltered stretch of water that stays relatively flat even when the summer wind picks up — which is exactly what makes it worth knowing about as a kite spot. The harbour has an unusual character: Lakki was developed during the Italian occupation and the waterfront retains that Italian-era feel. Rigging and launching here means working with that distinctive backdrop behind you. Getting to Leros typically means a ferry from the Greek mainland or a domestic flight. Lakki is the island's main port, so most arrivals come straight into the bay — accommodation and everyday services are right there. The waterfront is easy to access and the kite launch area is a short walk from wherever you're staying. The wind driver at Lakki is the Meltemi, the dominant summer northerly of the Aegean. Here it wraps around the island and arrives at the bay as side-shore from the right. That's a practical direction for kiting: you track along the bay rather than being pushed offshore, and the protected bay geometry holds the water flat. The result is a session you can focus on without fighting chop or worrying about drift into open water. For beginners, that combination — consistent side-shore, flat water, sheltered setting — is about as forgiving as the Aegean gets. Intermediates will find it a clean, low-effort session with room to work on technique. The usable wind arc runs from 180° to 0°, covering a wide south-through-north range. The Meltemi runs to its own schedule, and on days when it doesn't show, the bay is calm. There's no obvious secondary wind source here, so a windless day is just that. Seven restaurants sit along or close to the waterfront: da Dimitris Karaflas, da Petrino, Frangos, Kostas, LeonLimani, Paradeios, and Taverna Kokomoiras. Post-session food is well covered. One thing to know upfront: Lakki is not a kite hub. There's no dedicated school or gear rental on the bay. Come with your own kit and, if you're a beginner, with someone experienced to supervise your water time. Lakki is an active port, so choose your launch area with care and stay clear of ferry and vessel traffic. For an intermediate or experienced rider, this is a low-key session spot on a genuinely quiet island. It doesn't draw the kite crowds you'd find at better-known Aegean locations, and that's most of the appeal — good flat-water Meltemi wind without the circus.
