About Prasonisi

Prasonisi sits at the very tip of Rhodes, where a narrow sandy tombolo stretches out to a small headland at the southernmost point of the island. From the shore you're looking out west-southwest over open Mediterranean water — no land between you and North Africa. That exposure is exactly what makes it work. The spot runs on the Meltemi, the summer northwesterly that dominates the Aegean from roughly June through October. When it fires, it arrives side-onshore from your right as you face the water — a classic angle for wave riding with a solid safety margin. Expect 20-30 knots when it's properly on, with rolling swell building to 0.5-2 metres depending on how long the Meltemi has been blowing and how far it's had to run. The tombolo itself is the key feature. The sand strip creates two distinct sides: the open Mediterranean side where you'll be riding, and the lagoon side to the east. Kitesurfing is restricted on the lagoon side — don't set up there regardless of how inviting the flat water looks. You're on the wave side, full stop. The beach on the wave side is wide enough for a comfortable setup outside peak season, but July and August draw a crowd. Arrive early, especially when the Meltemi is running reliably. The launch is sand throughout, no rocks to negotiate, but the rolling swell means you need to time your entry through breaking waves rather than just walking in. With consistent side-onshore flow your upwind safety margin is solid, but body-dragging out through breaking water requires confidence. Once riding, this is a lively session. The waves keep building through the day, and intermediate riders should be comfortable on swell before they book the flight. The Meltemi tends to build as the afternoon progresses — early sessions are often cleaner and at the lower end of the wind range, while afternoons can push toward the upper end. That predictable cycle means you can plan your days once you're there. For accommodation, Kedros, Light House II, Ocean Palace, and Zanetos are all close to the spot. The Lighthouse restaurant and Oasis cover food and drink on site. Staying local makes sense — the Meltemi isn't always on, and being nearby when it kicks in after a quiet morning matters more than you think. Getting to Prasonisi means driving south down Rhodes, roughly 90 minutes from Rhodes Town. The road leads to the tip of the island and the tombolo is unmistakable from a distance. The wind arc covers 160°–340°, which puts the northwest Meltemi squarely in the usable window. June through October is your season.
