About Dompu Bay

Dompu Bay sits in Dompu Regency on Sumbawa Island, West Nusa Tenggara — a wide, open bay located north of the well-known Lakey Peak. Where Lakey draws the swell-hunting crowd, Dompu Bay offers something different: a broad expanse of sheltered, shallow flat water backed by a protected mangrove coast, and a noticeably calmer atmosphere overall. Dompu town is the regional hub and your access point to the bay. Accommodation options in and around town include Hotel Rinjani, Hotel Adhiyaksa, Hotel Sahab, Hotel Wisma Praja, ANNISAH, and Base camp — a reasonable spread of choices for a spot that's still off the main kite tourist circuit. For food, Aloha Cafe and Restaurant Dompu and Bakso Puncak are both within reach. The kite area itself is the main draw. The wide bay gives you room to run, and the protected mangrove coast keeps the water calmer and more sheltered than you'll find at Lakey Peak. This is genuinely flat-water territory — shallower too — which changes the riding style completely. Freeriders and those working on freestyle moves will appreciate the open surface that the bay can deliver during the right conditions. Wind comes from the southeast during the prime June-to-September season, angling in at roughly 130–155°. That's a side-onshore direction — generally forgiving for both launching and water re-entry, and it tends to keep you drifting toward the beach rather than out to open water. The usable kite window runs from 120° to 280°, giving decent coverage if the breeze clocks a little in either direction through the day. One reality to respect: local fishing boats work this bay. They're part of the landscape here — not a nuisance — but you're sharing the water with an active fishing community. Read the fleet's position before you rig up, stay aware of lines in the water, and give boats a wide berth. Locals are generally accustomed to kite fleets in these waters, but the coexistence only works if riders stay switched on. For skill level, the flat water and side-onshore wind make this a reasonable choice for intermediates looking to build hours in calmer conditions than Lakey. Beginners should still arrive with solid basics — the bay is sheltered, but open coastal water demands self-rescue competency. The window for reliable SE trades is June through September; outside these months, wind becomes less predictable. There's no kite school at the bay itself, so come prepared. If you need instruction, the options at Lakey Peak are your best bet before making the trip north to Dompu.
