Tucked into a bay in Jeneponto district, about 80 kilometres south of Makassar along the southern coast of Sulawesi, this village sits in the path of one of Indonesia's most reliable trade wind corridors. The mountains inland create a natural Venturi effect, squeezing and accelerating the south-easterly trade winds as they funnel across the bay. The result is 20 to 35 knots, side-onshore from the east-southeast through south to west-southwest — the 100–250° arc — for the better part of May through October. A flat, sandy lagoon runs more than two kilometres along the shore, shallow enough to walk far out and calm enough to learn on.
