Selayar Island dangles off the southern tip of Sulawesi, part of the Kepulauan Selayar archipelago in South Sulawesi province. Benteng, the island capital, sits on the southeastern coast facing the Banda Sea — and it's that SE exposure that makes it work for kite. From May through October, the Banda Sea trade wind arrives SE at 15–25 knots, side-onshore to the beach near town: consistent and largely uninterrupted by upwind island topography. Getting here takes commitment. Selayar is accessible by ferry from the Sulawesi mainland or by regional flight, with the airport a short distance from Benteng. Either way, you're arriving at one of Indonesia's quieter corners — no kite schools, no gear hire, no safety infrastructure on site. Pack everything you need and carry your own spares. The launch area is a coastal stretch near Benteng, where the SE-facing shoreline gives a reliable side-onshore angle through the trade wind season. The water is the kind of clean turquoise that makes the journey worth it: warm, clear Banda Sea water. The usable kite window runs 50° through 190° — a broad arc that captures the SE and S flows that dominate the season. When the wind clocks more southerly, the riding opens up toward a cross-onshore angle. Taka Bonerate Atoll lies just to the SE of Selayar — the largest atoll in Southeast Asia, and the reason most visiting divers and snorkellers make the journey to Benteng in the first place. For kiters, it's both context and a caution: the atoll is large, its reefs and shallows are extensive, and it is not a place to drift into on a busted kite. Keep your downwind distance conservative and maintain a clear self-rescue path back to shore at all times. Benteng town itself is small but functional. Careeta Coffee, Crema Cafe, Simbiosa Cafe, Warkop Merah Putih, Warkop passiana, and Warung Selerata cover your coffee and snack needs. Rumah Makan AGUNG is the go-to for a proper sit-down meal. These are local warung and coffee shops — no tourist markup, no kite gear, just good Indonesian food and company. The riding suits competent intermediates and above. The trade wind is steady during the season, but the remoteness is the real variable: if something goes wrong — gear, body, or both — you are a long way from help. Self-rescue capability is not optional here; it's the minimum standard. Come with a buddy if you can arrange it. Selayar is not a spot you stumble onto. It's one you plan around, most likely as part of a trip already built around Taka Bonerate's world-class diving. If you're making the journey anyway, a few sessions on clean Banda Sea water with a proper SE trade wind is a compelling reason to pack the kite bag. The wind is real, the water is beautiful, and you'll almost certainly have the break entirely to yourself.
