About Pantai Mawun

Pantai Mawun is a crescent-shaped sheltered bay on the southern coast of Lombok, sitting roughly 13 kilometres west of the busier stretch around Kuta. Three sides of the bay are hemmed in by steep hillsides, which do something useful for kiteboarders: they funnel and accelerate the SE trade wind as it drives in from between 130° and 155°. That compression effect means the wind at Mawun can punch harder and cleaner than regional forecasts might suggest — the terrain is doing real work here. The riding season runs May through September, when the SE trade establishes itself solidly across southern Lombok. Expect wind in the 15–25 knot range during this window, enough to keep most intermediates and up well occupied. The bay's sheltered geometry pays dividends on the water surface: you get predominantly flat water over a sandy bottom, which makes Mawun a comfortable environment for drilling technique or just clean, uncluttered riding. The sandy bottom keeps things forgiving when you go in. The crescent shape creates a natural kite window aligned squarely with the prevailing direction, with an overall usable arc running from 110° to 260°. That is a generous spread that accommodates natural variation in the trade without pushing you into awkward angles relative to the beach. The same hillside topography that accelerates the wind introduces a hazard worth respecting. Terrain-channelled flow can gust and shift unexpectedly where the trade interacts with the surrounding ridgelines — particularly during the first part of a session when you are still reading the pattern. Spend time watching the water surface and any kites already flying before you set up. Know your downwind exit options, because the bay geometry changes as you move out of the sheltered pocket. On the beach, the facilities are well covered for a relatively remote spot. Aldy Warung, Batu Landar Resto, Godspeed, Kampung Cafe, Kind Warung, and Laut Biru handle food; Aliya cafe and LAUT BIRU KAFE are the options for drinks between sessions. For staying overnight, Amber Lombok Beach Resort and Bukit Indah Boutique Accomodation are both within reach of the beach. Southern Lombok warrants at least a couple of days, and Mawun's SE-season reliability makes it worth building a trip around. Overall: consistent flat-water conditions, a wind angle that lands squarely in the usable window, and enough beach-side facilities to keep you comfortable. Mawun rewards riders who respect the terrain effect and check conditions before launching, but the flat water and sandy bottom make it accessible to a wide range of levels once you understand what the hillsides are doing.
