Poetto is Cagliari's city beach — 8 kilometres of SSE-facing sand stretching along the southern edge of Sardinia's capital. It's one of the most accessible kite spots on the island by a significant margin: you're launching from an urban beach with the city directly behind you, which means no mountain passes, no rough tracks, and no long drive to find the water. Get to Cagliari and Poetto is there. The beach faces southeast, and that orientation defines the experience. Levante (E) and Scirocco (SE) are the onshore winds here, pushing into the usable window of 70°–250°. When either of those is running, you get a genuine onshore or side-onshore flow. The water close to shore tends toward the flat and shallow before it opens out further from the beach, which suits riders who want to work on technique or freestyle without having to manage lumpy conditions from the start. The thing that separates Poetto from more forgiving spots is the Mistral. This powerful northwest wind is offshore here — and that matters. When the Mistral is in the forecast, Poetto is the wrong choice for that day, full stop. Local kiters know the wind rose well and wait for the E and SE windows. Work within the 70°–250° arc and the beach delivers what it promises; drift toward NW and the setup becomes dangerous. Poetto is a winter spot. October through April is when Levante and Scirocco arrive consistently enough to build sessions around. Summer on Sardinia tends to go to the Mistral-exposed northern beaches; Poetto quietens down in the warmer months as the wind pattern shifts. Access and facilities are genuine strengths. The beach sits within easy reach of central Cagliari with the kind of beachfront infrastructure a popular city beach builds over decades. Da Tore al Poetto and Emerson beach club are on the waterfront; Antica Cagliari Lungomare and its terrace offer a proper post-session sit-down. For kit, anchor your choices to the wind arc: 70°–250° is the usable window and what's in range on a given day determines your size. This spot suits intermediate riders and above who can assess conditions confidently before launching.
