Dervio sits at the northern end of Como's eastern arm, where the Varrone river meets the lake at the foot of steep Alpine flanks. It's a small lakeside village that happens to catch one of the most reliable thermal winds on Como — and for kiters chasing consistent south-southwest direction, it's typically the sharpest option on this lake. The wind here is the Breva, a classic Alpine thermal that builds over the southern plains and funnels northward as the day heats up. Between Dervio and the village of Cremia across the water, a Venturi effect tightens and cleans the airflow, delivering S/SSW wind in the 14–22 knot range. The window is predictable: expect it to fill in around 14:00 and hold through to roughly 19:00. The season runs March through July, with late spring typically the most consistent stretch. The shore faces SSW, which lines you up nicely with the prevailing wind for a clean side-to-side or side-onshore launch depending on the day. The water is flat — you're on a mountain lake, not the sea — which makes this a genuinely enjoyable place to session if you like powered riding without chop fighting back at you. There are no ocean swells to deal with, just clean lake surface and mountain scenery that'll have you forgetting to watch your kite. Getting to Dervio is a question of threading Como's lakeside road. It's tight in places, as lake roads tend to be, so factor that in if you're arriving with a roof box or trailer. Parking near the launch area at the river mouth is limited; arrive earlier in the afternoon before the wind fills to secure a spot and give yourself time to rig without rushing. The launch area at the Varrone mouth gives you reasonable space, though lake spots have their natural limits — you're not working with a wide open beach here, so be tidy with your lines and aware of other users, particularly in the busier summer months. Two schools operate locally: Adrena Kitesurf School and Boarderline Kitesurf School, both worth knowing about whether you need a lesson, a refresher, or just local knowledge about the day's conditions. After riding, the options are solid: Bar Il Pontile, Bar L'Angolo, Bar Pin, and Angolo Bar are all within reach, along with restaurants including Al Rustic Ristorante Pizzeria Bar Gelateria, Alla Sostra, and Al Rustic. The Breva is directionally consistent, which is a real asset, but the Venturi effect can sharpen gusts at times — treat it as a spot for riders who know how to read a building thermal and manage power spikes rather than a relaxed beginner beach. That said, if you're learning and have school support, the flat water is genuinely forgiving. For anything south of the Alps with this kind of thermal regularity and flat water, Dervio is a serious spot.
