About Colico · Lake Como

Colico occupies the northern end of Lake Como in Lombardy, where the mountains press tight against the water and the lake runs south for kilometers. It's the most accessible kite launch on Como — good setup space, flat shoreline, and none of the scramble that comes with harder-to-reach spots. The Breva is the wind this spot is built around. That's the thermal that typically builds from the south as the day warms up, pushing north along the lake's long axis. Colico's usable wind arc runs 115° to 245°, covering the southeast-through-southwest range where the Breva lives. The shore faces directly south down the lake, so when it fires, you're launching into the wind across flat, protected water. There's no swell here, no tidal variation — just the lake surface, which reads as glassy to lightly rippled depending on wind strength. It's forgiving water compared to what you'd deal with on the coast. North wind is the exception, and the instruction here is straightforward: don't use it. The mountain terrain around Colico's northern shore creates gusty, turbulent conditions when wind comes from that direction. It's not a judgment call — it's the wrong condition for this launch. The spot sits as a noted fallback when Gera Lario, the other main Como kite location, is crowded. For that to work as a backup, access and setup have to be reliable, and that's what Colico delivers. Being on an Alpine lake enclosed by steep ridgelines changes how thermal wind behaves. Gusts can arrive faster and the wind can build and back off more quickly than you'd see at a coastal spot with more open fetch. Read the lake surface, keep a solid upwind margin, and know where you're going if the wind drops unexpectedly. Two schools operate here: 414 Kitesurf School, and Epic Gust Kitecoaching - Boat Kitesurfing School Lake Como, which runs boat-based instruction — a practical option for water starts and deep-water technique without fighting the shore launch. For accommodation, Area Camper Lido caters to campers and campervans. Post-session food is covered by Bar Lido Ristorante, Ella's Bar, Blue River, and Ella's; Bar Roma, Bar Tabacchina, and Bobar handle the lighter café end. Colico is a Breva spot. On a clean southern thermal day, the flat water and solid setup area add up to a good session. In northerly conditions, it's a spot to leave for another day.
