About Funtanamare

Funtanamare sits on Sardinia's rugged southwest coast, just north of Portoscuso in the Carbonia-Iglesias province. The beach faces west, and when the Mistral arrives from the northwest, it wraps around to deliver classic side-onshore conditions — the kind that build genuine Mediterranean swell and make wave riders very happy. Getting there is straightforward: the spot is accessible via the coastal road south from Gonnesa, where the beach eventually opens up with parking near the shore. The coastline here is a mix of rocky sections and sandy stretches, so take a few minutes to walk the shoreline before you set up. Find a sandy section clear of rock, and if you're not familiar with the spot, scout it at low tide to understand what's underneath. The usable wind arc runs from 200° through to 340°, covering everything from a solid southwest through to northwest. The Mistral is the headline act: an organized, persistent wind that builds proper swell rather than just surface chop. With the shore facing due west, a northwest Mistral delivers that ideal side-onshore angle — power across the wave face, a clear return line to the beach. When it's firing, Funtanamare offers wave sailing that's genuinely hard to find elsewhere on the island. That said, this spot earns its intermediate-to-advanced rating honestly. The rocky sections of coastline demand attention, and wave conditions here aren't always forgiving. If you're still building confidence in swell, look for a lighter day to get your bearings before committing when the Mistral is pumping. Experienced wave riders, on the other hand, will find conditions that reward commitment. Season-wise, September through June is when Funtanamare delivers. The Mistral can fire at any point across that window, with autumn and spring typically offering the most consistent spells. Summer can go light — it's not guaranteed, so don't base a dedicated kite trip here in July or August without a solid backup plan. For instruction and local knowledge, Agriturismo scuderie de morimenta and Kite Village Sardegna KVS Punta Trettu Kite School both operate in the area. Food is covered by Bar del Pescatore and Fontanamare - Pizza and Restaurant.
