About Santa Maria del Focallo

Santa Maria del Focallo sits on the southernmost tip of Sicily, tucked along the Iblean coast between Portopalo di Capo Passero and Marina di Ragusa. This stretch of shoreline runs for over five kilometres of fine golden sand, facing due south — and that orientation is everything for the riding here. The beach is reachable from the small coastal town of the same name. Parking is generally available along the seafront area, and the flat terrain makes gear transport to the water straightforward. The shore faces south, which means SE winds — a common pattern here — come in side-onshore from your left. That is a friendly angle for most riders, keeping you tracking along the beach rather than fighting upwind or getting pushed offshore. The water character is the standout feature: shallow, flat, and forgiving. This is not a deep-water spot with heavy chop — it is the kind of setup where you can walk out a good distance before it gets deep, which matters when you are relaunching or recovering from a fall. For beginners, this combination of side-onshore SE wind and shallow water is genuinely one of the better natural setups you will find on the island. Intermediates can work the flat water for carves and speed runs across the long, uninterrupted beach. The usable wind window runs from 100° through to 260°, covering the prevailing SE and S directions well. Southern Sicily picks up consistent wind through the warmer months, with the season running from roughly April through October. Outside that window the Mediterranean can turn unsettled and conditions become less predictable. Being part of the Iblean coast kitesurfing corridor, this is a recognised spot — expect other riders during peak summer months, which helps with safety but means managing your launch space. The long beach gives you plenty of room to spread out and find your own section. After a session you are well covered. The beachfront area has a solid cluster of options: Bar Mattioli, Caffè Italia, Amuri Non Solo Caffè, Da Salvo, Kiosco Rialto, Mitox, and Mood for a coffee or cold drink, plus La Conchiglia and I Due Re for a proper sit-down meal. Murphy's Pub rounds it out for an evening drink. On hazards: the shallow water that makes this beginner-friendly also means watching your fins and board near sandbanks. Check conditions before launching if you are unfamiliar with the tidal state. During busy summer months give beachgoers adequate space and coordinate with fellow riders on the water.
