About Mellieha Bay (Għadira)

Mellieha Bay — locally known as Għadira — sits at the northern tip of Malta, and it's the island's largest and only proper sandy beach. The bay faces northeast, and that orientation turns NE, E, and ESE winds into clean onshore conditions. From the northwest you get a side-onshore angle that's workable and often steadier than it looks on a map. The usable wind arc runs from 315° through to 135°, which gives this spot a genuinely wide window across the year. Getting there is simple — the bay is well-signposted from Mellieħa town, which sits on the ridge above. Parking runs along the beachfront road, so you can rig close to the water without a long gear drag. The beach is wide, sandy, and notably shallow — you'll be wading for a good 200 metres before the water deepens. That makes this one of the more forgiving launches in the Mediterranean for beginners: room to body-drag in, sort your lines, and walk back without being swept anywhere fast. If you're still building your water re-launch skills, this is a good place to practise. More experienced riders should just be aware that the shallows mean you'll be on your feet a lot if things go sideways early in the session. In the bay, conditions run from flat to lightly choppy depending on wind direction. East wind generates a bit more texture; NE tends to keep the surface smoother. This is not a wave spot — it's flatwater and small chop territory, which suits learning and technique work well. Peak season splits into two windows: March through May, and September through November. The Gregale — the northeast wind that drives Malta's kiteable conditions — picks up reliably in these shoulder periods. Mid-summer tends to be lighter and more variable. Winter Gregale can arrive with more punch and gusts, so check the forecast carefully before heading out in the colder months. One hard fact to build your trip around: there are no kite or windsurf rental shops at Mellieha Bay. You bring your own gear, full stop. If you're flying in, factor bag fees and airline equipment policies into your planning. After your session, the beachfront has solid options. Costa del Sole, Il Pirata, Great Dane, and Munchies Mellieħa Bay cover sit-down meals. Sea View Bar, Sea View Café, Riviera Blue, Square Bar, and Hansen Gastro Bar work for something quicker. Il-Bottegin Bar & Restaurant at La Vittoria Band Club is worth a look if you want a more local atmosphere. Skill-wise, the shallow water and flat-to-choppy bay conditions make Mellieha a confident recommendation for beginners and intermediates. Experienced riders can have a solid session here, but if you're chasing serious power or waves on a given day, this probably isn't your best call.
