About PK55

PK55 sits on a remote stretch of Mauritanian Atlantic coastline, 55 kilometres north of the capital Nouakchott. The name gives it away: the spot is at the 55-kilometre mark on the coastal piste. Getting there means driving north out of Nouakchott, then turning off onto a 10-minute dirt track that drops you to the beach. The track is manageable in a 4x4, but low-clearance vehicles can struggle if the soft sand has been churned by wind. What you find is a long, wide, empty beach with nothing on it — no kite schools, no beach bars, no infrastructure of any kind. This is the spot the Nouakchott kite community uses for its regular sessions, which tells you everything: the wind is real and consistent enough to keep making the drive. The wind window runs from south through west to north (180°–359°), and the dominant NNW flow sits comfortably inside that arc. Afternoons are the productive window most days. The core season runs February through August, with a second reliable stretch from mid-October through November. Winds typically arrive at 14–20 knots — solid working conditions that suit intermediate and up riders on standard equipment. Lighter and stronger days happen, so check the forecast before you commit to the trip. The water is generally flat with occasional chop. The note of 'occasionally choppy' is honest: on windier days short-period wind chop builds, but for much of the season the surface is clean enough for freestyle, freeride, and foil. There is no significant organised swell here in typical conditions. Launch is directly from the beach. The long flat sand makes rigging and landing easy, and with essentially nobody else around you are not navigating pedestrians or other kiters. But self-sufficient here means exactly that: bring everything — water, food, sunscreen, tools, spare parts. Mobile signal can be unreliable this far from the city, so do not count on getting outside help quickly if something goes wrong. The Saharan heat and UV at this latitude are serious. The riding wind keeps you cool on the water, but once you are on the beach the sun is relentless. A rashguard and sun hat are not optional. For riders who want a genuine remote session — quality wind, empty beach, no scene — PK55 delivers. It is a working kitesurf spot rather than a resort destination, which is precisely the point.
