About La Baie de l'Etoile

La Baie de l'Etoile sits 14 kilometres north of Nouadhibou on the Atlantic coast of northwestern Mauritania — roughly 400 kilometres south of Dakhla, and about as far from a tourist trail as a kite spot gets. The name means "Bay of the Star," and the setting earns it: a protected marine area enclosing a roughly 12-square-kilometre flat-water lagoon, ringed by desert dunes and wild Atlantic shoreline. On a good day, you have all of it to yourself. Getting here takes commitment. Nouadhibou is the gateway — you'll fly or overland into the city, then arrange local transport and a guide for the 14-kilometre run north to the bay. There are no facilities at the spot itself: no kite school, no rental shop, no café, nothing. Bring every litre of water and every piece of kit you need before you leave town. That reality filters out the casual crowd, which is exactly why riders who do make it describe the place in almost reverential terms. The lagoon is the draw. Flat, vast, and sheltered just enough by the surrounding geography, it's a dedicated speed and freestyle venue — the kind of surface where you can sheet in and just run. Beyond the lagoon, open Atlantic water stretches west, offering more expansive riding when the conditions suit. The NNW trade wind arrives side-onshore through the season, keeping launches manageable and the riding direction sane. Wind season runs from February through September. The NNW trade typically delivers 15–25 knots across that window — reliable enough to plan a trip around, though individual days vary. The side-onshore angle means a launched kite drifts toward shore rather than out to sea, which matters considerably when you're riding somewhere this remote. Skill level: intermediate to advanced. The spot itself is not technically complicated, but the context is. You are a long way from help. Self-rescue skills, solid kite control in variable conditions, and the ability to manage a bad day without a chase boat or safety team on standby are non-negotiable. This is not a beginner progression destination. For accommodation and food, Nouadhibou is your base. Options in the city include Auberge Des Dauphins, Deyina Beach Hotel, and Apartamento Playa NDB City Cabano for overnight stays. For food, Restaurant La Paillote, Restaurant café Oasis Tunisien Noudhibou, and several other spots are available in town. Stock up thoroughly before heading north — nothing is available at the bay. Desert light, a marine protected area with remarkable wildlife, and a flat lagoon that stretches further than you can comfortably ride in a session: La Baie de l'Etoile rewards the effort of getting there with something genuinely rare. Plan carefully, hire a guide, and give yourself at least a few days on the water.
