N-facing coast gives side-onshore from right. Also receives "Norte" fronts November–February (N/NNW, 15–35 kt). Flat water, all levels; multiple schools. One of Mexico's most consistent and underrated spots.

About Progreso — El Playón

El Playón is a two-kilometre stretch of sand sitting just west of Progreso's long pier on the north-facing Gulf of Mexico coast. The Yucatán Peninsula pushes you out into warm, open water, and the orientation does most of the work: a flat, shallow coastline that keeps conditions accessible and the launch area uncomplicated. The wind story here runs in two chapters. From February through July, the NE thermal trade wind is the main event — blowing 12 to 35 knots, with the strongest, most consistent runs coming between March and June when afternoon thermals build on top of the prevailing flow. The north-facing coast puts that NE wind side-onshore from your right, which is a genuinely friendly setup: clean water-start area, natural drift back toward the beach if things go wrong, and none of the awkward crabbing you deal with on a directly onshore angle. The second chapter is Norte season, roughly November through February, when cold fronts push N to NNW winds through the Gulf at 15 to 35 knots. These arrivals are less predictable than the thermals but can deliver sharp, quality sessions when they come through. The water is flat. This is not a wave spot, and that's entirely the point. El Playón gives you the kind of uninterrupted runs on smooth water where you can actually work on technique rather than just manage the conditions. Long reaches, clean gybes, room to think — the beach runs two kilometres and there's space to spread out when rigging and rigging, so it rarely feels crowded in the way that tighter spots do. Multiple kite schools operate here, which tells you something about how reliably the wind shows up. Whether you're learning or logging serious freeride time, the flat water and consistent thermals make this a productive spot to be. Watch the pier. It's the obvious landmark for orientation and a useful reference for your upwind limit, but keep well clear of it when launching and on any upwind run. Beyond that, the main thing to manage is the variability that comes with Norte fronts — conditions can shift faster than the steady thermal pattern, so keep an eye on the forecast when you're in the winter window. Progreso itself is a relaxed Gulf coast town with the facilities you'd expect: food, accommodation, and a beachfront strip that slows down appreciably outside the summer holiday season. The kite beach doesn't carry much noise internationally, but within Mexico's kite community it has a strong reputation for consistency and accessibility. If you're in the Yucatán and want flat water with reliable thermal wind and real schools on the sand, El Playón is the answer.
